Storytellers and story lovers gather in Clear Lake for the Annual Iowa Storytelling Festival in July. The festival commences with the Ghost Boat of scary and eerie tales on Friday night, and continue with free storytelling performances throughout the day on Saturday in beautiful Clear Lake City Park.

The Clear Lake Public Library sponsors this event which also provides opportunities for visiting storytellers to perform at Saturday's Story Exchange. Story Exchange performers are allotted a maximum of ten minutes, and their story content should be suitable for a family audience.

The Iowa Storytelling Festival is part of LakeFest, a community arts celebration that also includes the Art Sail of fine arts and crafts, and the Lakeside DixieFest music concerts. Clear Lake is located on I-35 twenty miles south the Minnesota border. It is two hours from Des Moines and the Twin Cities, five hours from Omaha and Milwaukee, and six hours from Chicago. For further information about the festival or to register for the Story Exchange, contact Jean Casey at 641-357-6134 or clplib@netins.net.

Among the several smaller storytelling events held in the state each year, Wisconsin is also host for three larger annual events:

*Northlands Storytelling Network Annual Conference

**La Crosse Storytelling Festival – always the Friday and Saturday after Labor Day in September at Myrick Park in La Crosse, WI. We are located on the Mississippi River just across from Minnesota and Iowa. In 2010 we are featuring Kevin Kling, Kevin McMullin, and Stuart Stotts.  Hans Mayer, musician, will also be entertaining us. It will be a great weekend. Workshops are held on Saturday morning. The cost is just $10. Workshop topics will be posted on our web site. This is a wonderful opportunity for Northlands members to learn from other great tellers. Our web site is www.lacrossestoryfest.com

The Bluff Country Tale Spinners storytelling guild meets the second Thursday of each month at Grounded Specialty Coffee, 308 Main St., La Crosse, WI  54601.  Please contact wachutateri@yahoo.com or talesbyterry@aol.com for further information. Visit www.lacrossestoryfest.com for further information about the guild.

*Wisconsin Storytellers' Get-Together ("Cheddar Curtain" crashers welcome!)
